We placed 7th out of 15 with a score of 130.5. I was just happy that we got a score, since Winnie is just a baby two year old and I simply wanted to take her for the experience. Our reined work went pretty well, we even +1/2 a stop. For the fence work we got a fast cow, and we got a bit behind, but overall I am very happy with her performance. Our new website is http://slidingslranch.com, please visit!

For the exciting stuff-my business partner Becky bought a new stud, Seven S Gunpoint. He is by AQHA Super Horse Real Gun and out of a Smart Chic Olena mare. We had him for all of two weeks when we entered him in my first NRHA show-a Green As Grass Class in Hastings, MN last weekend. He stayed super quiet throughout the whole show, and we had a great time. It was nice for me to get back into the reining pen, as I haven't shown a reiner since I showed palomino horses as a youth.

If you are interested in breeding to "Gunner" please contact Becky at 715-307-2477. For a limited time his stud fee is only $500. Hope everyone had a fun holiday!

6 Days until the Mustangs!

I figured it was time for a Winnie update! Anyways, I've been working with Winnie to give her a bit of a headstart since I am sure that she will be put to the back burner when the mustangs arrive. (Her leg healed nicely, no problems there...until the next time she decides to hurt herself) We have been working on standing tied quietly, and she is doing wonderfully. She stands to be saddled, and she lunges both directions w-t-c (she is lazy, and not really a fan of cantering). Today I bridled her, and spent some time ground driving. She catches on to everything pretty quick, the only issue I can see us having is that she is a little stiff laterally. I spend about 20 minutes a day with her, keeping it short and sweet.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_M74hP9pWJn8/SWAp8HUK6xI/AAAAAAAAAD8/1WaR90vNQ9k/s200/winniesaddle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287272075265501970" />

Winnie saddled, with her friend Marquita next to her for moral support. Actually, I ponied Winnie right after she was saddled, so Marquita was actually working for her oats!

Marquita is doing good too, its been really cold here so I've been riding her in a rope halter with the lead rope tied as reins, since I feel bad making her carry a cold bit. She is for sale officially now, and I've had a few people come out to test ride her. Hopefully some one will take her home soon, since I'll have two more mouths to feed in less than a week! One of my lesson students rode her bareback yesterday (with a helmet of course!) and had a blast. It was really cold, and riding bareback keeps the rider warmer!

How is everyone else handling the cold weather? It was warm today-27 degrees, however we got some freezing rain with it so the roads are almost impossible to travel. I'm really glad that I have the month off school-YAY WINTER BREAK!-so I don't really need to go anywhere. Our average temp over the past week has been between 0-10 degrees! I am getting really tired of thawing out frozen water buckets for the stall horses, and I triple check the outside "heated" waterers every day. Our horses can all get out of the wind (we have an 80' shelter) and we are really keeping a close eye on the young horses. We have doubled the amount of hay we feed too. Isn't winter fun? I'm so glad we have an indoor so I can at least keep riding!

Stay warm!

Mustang Blog

Hello all!

I will be blogging about the 2009 Midwest Mustang Challenge on a separate blog.

http://palyreinersmustang.blogspot.com/

Make sure to follow the correct blog for Mustang updates!

~Palyreiner

MUSTANG!

Its official! YAY! We have about 4 inches of snow on the ground, and it was all of 13 degrees out when I went to feed this morning. All of our horses have settled in nicely, and everyone has gained weight. We are feeding hay, but the horses spend most of the time out on the pasture, digging through the snow for the last bits of grass underneath. Everything looks so clean with a layer of white snow on top.

The NRHA Futurity was amazing. I watched Tim McQuay win it with Carol Rose's horse Shining N Sassy. Cody Sapergia was reserve with an awesome run on The Great Tag. Personally, I think that Cody should have won it, his horse seemed to read his mind, and he barely touched the reins. The entire ride seemed to have more finesse than Tim's. My throat hurt after cheering for Cody, thats for sure!

It was so cool to see these horses performing maneuvers like this, and then thinking that they are only 3 years old. It is amazing what horses will do for us. I am convinced that some of them loved hearing the crowd cheer for them, their ears would go up and they'd arch their necks a bit, as if saying "thats right, cheer louder!"

Links to the winning runs are below.

Tim McQuay & Shining &
Sassy

Cody Sapergia
& The Great Tag

Christmas is getting closer, and we are planning a barn party for the boarders to make peppermint bran mashes for the horses, decorate the barn. I'm leaving Wednesday night for Oklahoma City to go and see the NRHA Futurity Finals! I'm so excited! I'm especially looking forward to seeing the freestyle! And meeting Stacy Westfall again! And doing all of my Christmas shopping for my horsey friends. It is going to be amazing! Did I mention I'm excited?

Winnie is doing much better, her leg is normal size again and she isn't lame at all. She even decided that she felt good enough to not want to be caught. Which was a problem when she is loose on a 25 acre pasture. I got the chance to utilize my roping skills, and Marquita's rope horse skills, to bring her in. I can't blame her, she was being poked with two needles every time she was caught for the past 10 days to give her the penicillin.

I took this picture today while my girls were having their dinner. Winnie is on the left, Marquita is on the right.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M74hP9pWJn8/STSyquLvthI/AAAAAAAAADU/xkHHXgWBn6s/s200/girls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275037510579238418" />

Lame horse weekend :(

I swear, I could wrap my horses in bubble wrap and they would still find a way to get hurt.

Winnie decided that it would be a great idea to give herself a little cut on the inside of her right front foreleg, above the knee. It looked like a shallow scrape to me, so when I noticed it on Friday I didn't think much of it.

Wrong.

Saturday her leg swelled up and she would barely put weight on it. So I brought her in, smeared nitrofurazone on it (It is below freezing here, and our barn isn't heated. I figured it would not be smart to try and teach a long yearling to put up with a hose in this cold) I went to our local feed store and bought penicillian, and shes been getting 20ccs a day. Along with some bute for the swelling, and to reduce her fever (102.8! AHHH!)

Sunday morning her temp was back to normal, the swelling had gone down some, and she was willing to walk around on the leg. She will be getting 20ccs of penicillian for 10 days, and bute to reduce the swelling too. I'll keep you guys posted on her progress.

Now, I am terrified of needles. I have a lot of trouble giving my horses shots, but it is important that EVERY horse owner know how. On saturday, it was just me at the barn, so I had to just suck it up and do it. If you don't know how to give shots, ask your vet how.

Now, if one hurt lame horse wasn't enough...Marquita was really tenderfooted on sunday. The ground is now frozen, and I pulled her shoes for the winter. She is out on pasture, and it is too much of a hassle to try and pick out frozen snow clumps from shoes. Apparently she doesn't like the hard frozen ground at all. She is totally fine in the sandy indoor arena, and even walks across grass fine. But the dry lot where we have the horses all penned in until hunting season is over is hard, rocky ground. So she got some bute this weekend too.

Is winter over yet?

Brrr Its COLD!

I am SOOO glad that we moved to the new place! WI weather decided to be cold, with a lot of wind and the temperature around 10 degrees. Made me very glad that we have an indoor arena now!

Marquita is always a little hard to catch, and now with 25 acres to roam on it takes a little extra walking to bring her in. I bring her in everyday to grain her, so she should start getting better about being caught.

I've decided that the new filly's name will be "Winnie" (thanks Jessie for the idea!). She also is a little skittish. Her second trailer ride ever was moving to the new place, and she loaded like a pro on Wednesday. She is taking the 25 acres of freedom to heart too, and its a good thing that she has buddied up with Marquita or I'd never catch her. She also gets grain every day now, and I'm sure that she will get friendlier as time goes on. I worked with her a little yesterday standing tied using the blocker tie ring. She stood quietly for about 5 min, and I called that good progress for the day and let her back out with her friends.

The indoor arena is beautiful, and doesn't get dusty at all. I rode my friend's barrel horse, and she takes a lot of lope circles to warm her up and no dust! Marquita acted like she been riding in this indoor her entire life, and was very well behaved even though shes had about a month off. My boyfriend came out to ride too, (hes very novice) and he enjoyed working on turning by weaving some poles and even got brave enough to try a few strides of a lope.

Hope everyone has a good weekend, and stay safe with the opening of deer season! Keep your horses in or close to the barn (we aren't letting ours out on the pasture this weekend, and are keeping them up in the paddocks close to the barn) or put blaze orange blankets on them. Be especially careful if you decide to go trail riding. And good luck to the hunters too, just be safe!

SDSU IHSA Show

The horse I drew at the IHSA show on Sunday was a spur stop horse. I’ve never ridden one before. It was really, really strange to add leg to slow down a horse. It seemed completely counter-intuitive, and it went against every bit of ingrained muscle memory. The horse was a little crabby (all of the horses are after a weekend of IHSA riders) but I had an ok ride and placed 4th (3 points). I only need 7 more points to point up into the reining class!

I can see how it would be useful for novice riders, since a person’s first instinct when afraid is to clamp their legs on the horse. I can also see how it would be nice in the show pen, as you can slow your horse without moving the reins, and in essence, cue your horse without the judge noticing.

The cons I see: BIG learning curve for riders that are not used to a spur stop. Does this affect the horses’ resale? This is also definitely a pleasure/horsemanship thing, it would probably not be good for a reiner or cowhorse.

Anyone out there ever ridden a spur stop horse? We have a western IHSA show tomorrow. I'm excited, I'll post results tomorrow or Monday.

We move horses into the new place on Wednesday! YAY! Our dream is coming true! The website for the new place is www.freewebs.com/slidingslranch

I still haven't picked a name for the filly yet. Feel free to comment with any more ideas! I'm leaning toward Winne, but since she is from South Dakota, (and all of my horses have had a "K" or K sound in their names) I kinda like Dakota as a name.

I've also been contemplating filling out an application for the Midwest Mustang Challenge. The new farm is a perfect facility, and I'm pretty sure that I could do it. I have a friend that did it last year, and she had a blast. I suppose I'm afraid of being overconfident in my training abilities, and also wondering if I have the time to train a mustang, with my new filly and all. Anyone out there that has trained a mustang with any tips?

Have a good weekend, and wish me luck tomorrow!

~PalyReiner

SNOW!?!

Its official. Winter has arrived in WI.

I was trying to deny the inevitable. Last week the weather was wonderful. I could ride outside in just a fleece jacket and be completely comfortable. I love crisp fall trail rides in the cool air, with no flies to bother us and the pretty colors of the leaves.

Not anymore :( Today we have this awful mix of snow and frozen hail pellets. It makes walking outside annoying. And we don't move into the new place with an indoor arena for a few weeks yet.

Granted, I love trail rides through the snow too, but todays weather is not going to leave a soft, fluffy layer of snow to ride through. Nope, right now we have hard frozen ground, which does not do well on my horses feet (which I leave barefoot over the winter).

Other news:
I am still entertaining name ideas for the new filly. I won't get time to work with her until we move to the new place, but she is generally sweet. So far my favorite (thanks Jessie for the idea!) is "Winchester"-Winnie for short which I also like because it has "Win" in it and hopefully this filly will be my next winner!

The friend of mine with the accidentally bred mare is trading her for a 6 year old TB gelding, which is actually good for her as she wanted a Hunter/Jumper show horse.

Thats it for now, stay warm!

New Places...and Lymes Disease

Its been a crazy week. I got a nice tick bite, and have a mild case of lymes disease, which is no fun at all.

On the plus side, I am currently working on leasing a gorgeous horse facility with two friends. It has a beautiful 60' x 150' indoor arena, an 150' x 250' outdoor arena, a cute 5 stall barn and a 30 acres pasture with an 80' long shelter. It also has a small house on the property that I and a friend will live in.

The setbacks? Leasing this place will be expensive. Our goal is truly just to break even, and starting out in the middle of winter is going to be tough.

The advantages? This facility can handle anything. Boarders. Training horses. We can host clinics and small horse shows. It is even set up to have cattle. Unfortunately, the owner of one of these six stallions decided that it was ok to leave their stallion out on pasture. Said pasture is fenced by two lines of “hot” wire. This farm is known for fencing being down, or not hot, and horses getting loose. The stud is an AQHA halter horse, and he is HYPP N/H. Lovely.

As a boarder, I was more than a little concerned. However, someone was generally present all day, and my mare was stalled at night. I figured that my horse would be fine. Until one Sunday morning in June I went out to find my mare out with the stallion. And she was in flaming heat. Needless to say, I was pissed. I called the stud’s owners, put my mare in her stall, and went to work fixing the fence that he had easily torn through to get to my mare in heat.

To this day, I have still not received an apology. I highly doubt that I ever will. My mare didn’t come back into heat after her night of passion, and the stud owner gave her a shot to bring her back into heat. I was not present for this shot, but I was assured that it had all been taken care of.

I admit that the following was entirely my fault for the rest of this story. I should have spoke up sooner about my qualms of this stud being out in only two lines of “hot” wire. I should have been present when my mare received the shot to induce heat. I should have been pickier about the stables where I boarded my horse. The above reason was why I moved her to a different stable.

The sad part of this story is that my mare was not the only mare that was accidentally bred. Two other mares were also bred by this stud. And yet, the stud’s owner still kept him the two lines of “hot” wire. Anyone that knows the smallest thing about stallions knows that they need 6 foot of solid fencing, such as wood. A round pen works too. Two lines of hot wire are not going to deter a stallion tempted by a mare in heat. If you cannot provide the above fencing, THEN YOU SHOULD NOT OWN A STALLION!

After I moved my mare to a different barn, I first noticed that she behaved wonderfully. Without 6 stallions screaming at her, she had no reason to answer back. She had calmed down immensely. After about three months of wonderful behavior I realized that she hadn’t had a bad mare day in awhile…and my next thought was oh shit. I hadn’t noticed her coming into heat. Not once. How could I have not noticed this sooner? I feel like the worlds biggest idiot. So I scheduled a vet appointment to have her palpated.

Yesterday Marquita was palpated, and it was determined that she is not pregnant. YAY! I also had her teeth looked at and a general check up. The vet said that she is healthy. I asked why she didn’t show heat, as she had shown it pretty obviously at the barn with the studs. She said that with the studs being gone, and it being mostly mares she probably didn’t feel the need to breed and wasn’t as obvious with her heat symptoms. Since it is fall, she probably won’t show any heat symptoms until next spring.

For enquiring minds, the barn’s website is www.emeraldacres.org and the stallion is Tru Cool Splash.

How NOT to load a horse

I spent yesterday at the Central WI Horse Sale in Neilsville, WI. Prices were low, a reflection of our market since the closing of the slaughter plants, increased feed prices, and our uncertain economy. I didn't buy, but helped a friend that brought a few horses to sell.

As I was going to leave, I walked by some people trying to load a young palomino mare into a straight load bumper pull trailer. The mare would get her front feet in, and rather than give her a minute to assess her surroundings, the new owners would simply pull harder in an attempt to get her in. This mare reared in response to the pressure, and flipped over backwards onto the concrete.

With the many horse people at this sale, many went up to the new owners to offer assistance. We were quickly (and rudely) rebuffed with a "we know what we're doing, its all under control" response.

The new owners then tied a long rope directly to the inside of the trailer, so that the mare could only get so far back. Once again the mare gets both front feet into the trailer, then rears and flips over. Except now that she is tied tight to the trailer, she falls to the side of the trailer, her neck twisted in an unnatural angle. The new owners scramble to untie her, and then kick her to get her back up again.

Seriously people. Is this necessary? This poor filly has probably only been hauled in a spacious stock trailer. Would it have been too much to take it slow, and reward her for each foot she put in the trailer, rather than keeping so much pressure on her that she flips over? It really looks bad for our industry when horses are down, tied to a trailer, bleeding from cuts on their heads and dripping blood from their mouth. There are better ways to load a horse. Not to mention that she now associates trailers with pain, and it will most likely be very difficult to retrain her to load now that she fears trailers, and rightfully so.

Even though I may not agree with everything that the "Natural Horsemanship" movement has brought to the public and our industry, one would hope that this could be prevented by seeing that there are better ways to teach horses to load. Or that maybe horses (especially mares) cannot handle constant pressure, that there needs to be a reward-even if it is slight-for them to learn. These animals truly do want to please, if we give them the chance to understand what we want.

So I left the depressing horse sale, and headed back home. I hope that the filly's new owners gave her a break (and a vet check) and were more patient when they tried to load her next.

Trailer loading/unloading can be very dangerous for both horse and human. When I was 16 I borrowed a stock trailer to haul my old gelding for an overnight camping trip. It rained, and though I had tied my horse with a quick release knot, the rope got wet and expanded. I opened the trailer door, and was standing by my horse's head trying to get the knot untied. He decided enough was enough and started backing out. He hit the end of the rope, pulled back and then reared up. With me standing right in front of him, inches from flailing hooves. I don't know how, but I managed to unsnap his lead rope from his halter, and he flew backwards out of the trailer and ran for his stall in the barn. He had a few cuts on his forehead, but there were no major injuries to him or me. From then on I always untie the horses before opening the trailer doors, or if I can safely I haul the horses untied.

Moral of the story: Be patient when loading horses-especially horses that you just bought and are not certain if they load well or not. Trailering can be dangerous. Don't rush anything!

Bucking Blankets!

Yesterday I decided it would be a good idea, as winter is fast approaching, to make sure that the horses winter blankets were all in order, no tears, not missing any leg straps, and that they fit the horses they were meant for.

So I catch Marquita, and put on her blanket. She has had sheets on her when being stalled at shows, so it isn't the first time that she has had to wear more "clothes" than just a saddle and pad. She was a little antsy, but we worked through it and I adjusted all the straps until her blanket fit nicely. I decided to turn her out for a little bit with her blanket on. So I let her loose in the small paddock and as soon as I shut the gate she takes off, bucking like a rodeo bronc. She tore around the little pen, bucking and twisting and jumping and rearing and carrying on, trying to get this red monster off her back. I was stunned. This mare is my nice, quiet mare, that rarely acts up and she is acting like a 2 year old that was snubbed and had a saddle thrown on it suddenly and then turned loose. She continued bucking for about 20 minutes before finally calming down and returning to the hay pile that was set out for her, eating quietly as if nothing had happened.

My only other thought is if the blanket stayed on through all of that, then it definitely fits ok! Anyone else have unexpected results when blanketing a horse for the first time?

~PalyReiner

Yay for broke, quiet horses and Yay for cows!

Today Marquita and I helped a friend sort cattle. He has a herd of 50 angus beef cows that we needed to separate from their calves. So Marquita and I walked the 2 miles from the barn to my friend’s place. Once we get there we find that the cows are all on pasture, so Marquita and I (with the help of two other horseback friends) ride all the way around the pasture and bring the entire herd up to the sorting pen.

Once we have the cows and calves in the sorting pen, Marquita and I move the cows back out to the main pasture and keep the calves in, while 3 men on foot work the gates. Marquita was awesome throughout the entire process, and didn’t get overly excited with all the cattle. We even had a few of the cows bump into us, and it didn’t phase my paly mare one bit.

Once all the cows were back out on the main pasture, it was time to separate the bull calves from the heifer calves. The calves are a lot quicker and more skittish than the cows are, so Marquita needed to be quick on her feet, yet not so quick that we scared them. We made quick work of sorting the calves, and all together it only took an hour and half to bring all the cattle in, separate the mothers from the calves, and then separate the bulls from the heifers.

Days like today make me grateful that I have a nice mare that I can sort cows with one day, trail ride for 6 hours the next, and take to show the following weekend and not have to worry about anything but whether that calf is a bull or a heifer, or remembering my reining or horsemanship pattern. Marquita may not be a perfect reiner (yet?), but today she was the perfect sorting and penning horse.

~PalyReiner

Spinnin & Slidin, Lopin & Dreamin

Hello and welcome to the adventures of me, PalyReiner.
